Evaluations
To assess a patients symptoms and needs, we schedule an individual
evaluation appointment. For very young children, we conduct shorter
evaluation sessions on two different days. The diagnostic evaluation
includes:
- Direct observation
- Diagnostic teaching exercises
- Formal and informal assessment work
- Compilation and review of background information
- Conference with family members
- Resource referrals, as needed
- Follow-up written report
The goal of the evaluation is to determine:
- Whether a problem exists
- The scope and nature of the problem
- The probable cause(s) or contributing factors
- Approaches for dealing with the problem.

Interventions
Once a patients problem has been identified,
we work with the family to set goals for intervention and develop
a therapeutic plan to correct or treat the problem.
Goals
Goals for intervention focus on areas of need as well as measurable
behavior changes that indicate a patient is making progress. Goals
may be set for treatment periods ranging from 8 sessions to a year.
When long-term goals are set, we review them regularly at 3- to
4-month intervals.
Goals may include such items as:
- improving attention-focusing behavior
- increasing comprehension of spoken or written
language
- expanding verbal expression in spoken or
written form
- improving the effectiveness of social communication
- improving clarity of speech (articulation)
and conversation
- reducing hoarseness or atypical vocal patterns
- establishing acceptable vocal-hygiene and
speaking patterns
- increasing fluency and developing fluency-control
strategies
