Evaluations
To assess a patient’s symptoms and needs, we schedule an individual evaluation appointment. For very young children, we conduct shorter evaluation sessions on two different days. The diagnostic evaluation includes:

  • Direct observation
  • Diagnostic teaching exercises
  • Formal and informal assessment work
  • Compilation and review of background information
  • Conference with family members
  • Resource referrals, as needed
  • Follow-up written report

The goal of the evaluation is to determine:

  • Whether a problem exists
  • The scope and nature of the problem
  • The probable cause(s) or contributing factors
  • Approaches for dealing with the problem.

Consultations

If a patient has already been evaluated elsewhere, or to determine whether a comprehensive assessment is necessary, we can schedule a consultation. Consultative appointments may include:

  • Review of written records
  • Observation and informal diagnostic tasks
  • Conference with family members
  • Referral to appropriate resources
  • Follow-up written report.

The purpose of the consultation may be to:

  • Provide a second opinion
  • Review and make recommendations about the need for ongoing treatment
  • Consider the need for new treatment strategies, or
  • Discuss whether additional referrals may be necessary.

Interventions
Once a patient’s problem has been identified, we work with the family to set goals for intervention and develop a therapeutic plan to correct or treat the problem.

Goals
Goals for intervention focus on areas of need as well as measurable behavior changes that indicate a patient is making progress. Goals may be set for treatment periods ranging from 8 sessions to a year. When long-term goals are set, we review them regularly at 3- to 4-month intervals.

Goals may include such items as:

  • improving attention-focusing behavior
  • increasing comprehension of spoken or written language
  • expanding verbal expression in spoken or written form
  • improving the effectiveness of social communication
  • improving clarity of speech (articulation) and conversation
  • reducing hoarseness or atypical vocal patterns
  • establishing acceptable vocal-hygiene and speaking patterns
  • increasing fluency and developing fluency-control strategies

Treatment Options
The Clinic offers a variety of therapeutic options for patients and their families, depending on each patient’s treatment needs and goals:

  • Individual therapy (30-, 45- or 60-minute sessions)
  • Individual tutoring (45- to 60-minute sessions)
  • Small group therapy for 2 to 5 patients (30- or 45-minute sessions for groups of 2; 60- or 90-minute sessions for groups of 3 to 5)
  • Family counseling on communication issues for couples, parents, entire or extended families or care-givers.

Observation Opportunities
The Clinic has facilities that enable family members to observe a patient’s therapy as it occurs. (Observation is not available for counseling sessions.)
